Last issue, I asked for your thoughts about what gun legislation might be forthcoming from the Biden Administration, and some of your comments appear in the Firing Line section on pages 3 to 5. I am constantly gratified at the depth and breadth of GUN TESTS readers’ opinions on political topics. Most of the mail is reasoned discussion about the protection of our civil rights. I feel commitment and resolve in those readers’ words. I admit I get the hot blood when I think about what the disarmament forces will try to do. Here’s more about what some pundits and gun-rights advocates think is right around the corner, to go along with what GT readers say in Firing Line.
John Lott, Jr. wrote on the Real Clear Politics blog recently that “The first gun control bill that Biden will push in his first 100 days would make gun makers and sellers civilly liable for misuse of guns they sell. That means people could sue manufacturers whenever a crime, accident, or suicide occurs with a gun. We aren’t talking about cases where there was a product liability issue or where laws are violated, such as selling a gun without a valid background check. While it isn’t stated, the goal is to put the gun makers out of business.”
CNN reported, “Today, I am calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms, including requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets,” Biden said in a statement.
Ryan Cleckner, a former special operations sniper and a current firearms attorney, wrote in The Federalist, “Out of the myriad options a Biden administration will have to infringe on our constitutional protections, which will they choose first? Based on my experience with clients and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (AFT) as a firearms attorney, some recent news events, and a bit of firearm-industry intuition, I think the first things a Biden administration will do regarding guns if given the chance are: Banning pistol braces, banning homemade firearms/80 percent receivers, [and] banning on-line firearm and ammunition sales… Shortly after the first bans, the next gun control measures will likely be: Banning ‘assault weapons,’ banning ‘high capacity’ magazines, [and] requiring universal background checks.”
Okay, this is all very, very bad.
Worse still, the margin in the Senate to stop such legislation (assuming the filibuster stays in place, which is not guaranteed) is 10 Republican squishes, such as Burr, Cassidy, Collins, Graham, Murkowski, Portman, Romney, Sasse, and Toomey.
Yes, that’s only nine. Perhaps you have some ideas about which additional Republican is most likely to roll over and strip us of our gun rights?
